Passage: Joshua 20

Joshua 20

Our True Sanctuary

Introduction: The six cities of refuge in Jos. 20 offered a place of sanctuary for those causing unintentional death to another by accident or in self-defense. Relatives of the slain were culturally mandated to slay the one causing the death, and the cities of refuge provided God given sanctuary for the accused.

All of us are in need of sanctuary because, unlike the unintentional manslayer, we are all guilty before God.

Jesus is our True Sanctuary:

Each of the names of the six cities of refuge reflects an aspect of God’s character, person, and work, and more specifically, of Jesus as our refuge and sanctuary.
