TEXT: Luke 18:9-14

Introduction

Point of the Parable: God’s mercy is the basis by which we can approach God and be forgiven of our sin.

“He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves                                             that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt.”

Approach #1 – Be confident in _______________.

“God, I thank you that I am not like other men.”

1. You can be _______________ upright and very _______________ yet be far from God.

2. Having confidence in your own righteousness will result in having _______________ for others.

Approach #2 – Throw yourself on God’s _______________.

“God, be merciful to me, a sinner!”

1. You can be very _______________ and _______________ yet be close to God.

2. Throwing yourself on God’s mercy will result in having _______________ for others.

Conclusion

Punchline of the Parable: “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other.”

Application Questions

1.  Do you believe that no one is beyond the reach of God’s mercy? Why? Why not?

2.  On what basis was the Pharisee confident before God? Why is this a mistake?

3.  If you have contempt for another person, why is that an indication that you are trusting in yourself?

4.  Do you view anyone like a Pharisee would? How can you change your viewpoint?

5. Do you think it is fair that God immediately justifies a terrible sinner who believes and condemns a moral and religious person?
